Objectives

  1. Know the drivers for reducing carbon emissions from buildings and the programs and legislation helping meet carbon reduction goals.
  2. Understand the types of CO2 and the roles Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) play in helping designers compare and select low CO2 building materials.
  3. Explore Part A: The carbon intensity of common insulation materials, and Part B: How recycled/renewable/ biomass feedstocks reduce embodied carbon in graphite polystyrene insulation.
  4. Review some widely available tools helping designers compare the carbon impacts of building materials.
