College South Residence Hall

Last certified on:
Certification level: Silver

Project info

Size257,094 sq ft

College South is one of two residence halls constructed simultaneously within the heart of the Howard University campus. The new halls were the first projects to be developed as outlined by the new master plan and an initiative to bring students back to living on campus by offering housing that has a sophisticated array of features and facilities.

College South is six stories tall, approximately 255,000 square feet and houses 894 students within 459 units, including two apartments for faculty, staff and guests. The building replaces a previously under-utilized surface parking lot, and now completes the streetscape along 4th Street by strengthening the residential core on campus. The hall includes social lounges, a recreation room, common study areas, TV lounges and a central laundry facility on the ground floor. The building also houses a dedicated and secured storage room for 150 bicycles to help promote healthy living and mitigate the amount of cars on campus. College South was able to provide a separated lower level that includes the offices for student life, as well as classrooms, offices and a multi-purpose room for community activities.

The building is clad in metal panel, glass, and brick in an attempt to reference the historic structures on campus. The project team involved numerous stakeholders in the sustainable selection and review of the residence hall; including the university, the developer and managing entity, the Design-Build general contractor as well as the entire design team. College South and College North are the first LEED certified buildings on campus.
